Systems Engineering Fundamentals

In collaboration with the University of South-Eastern Norway TNO-ESI developed a Systems Engineering Fundamentals training.

Introduction to Systems Engineering Fundamentals Training

The Systems Engineering Fundamentals Training provides a solid foundation in modern systems engineering principles, tailored for professionals working in complex, multidisciplinary environments. This training is designed to build a shared understanding of systems engineering concepts, methods, and best practices - and to support their practical application in real-world projects.

The program is flexible and can be delivered in online, hybrid, or face‑to‑face formats, ensuring it fits seamlessly with organizational needs and participant availability.

Course Structure

Online Course Materials

All learning materials are accessible through an online learning environment, ensuring participants can study at their own pace.

Each of the 9 modules includes:

  • 4–5 short instructional videos
  • A handout summarizing key concepts
  • Additional references for deeper exploration
  • A real-world industry example introducing the module theme
  • This helps bridge theory and practice from the very beginning.
  • The study load per module is approximately 3–5 hours.

Lectures and materials remain available throughout the training for flexible review and self-study.

Learning Experience

Teamwork

  • Participants are expected to work in small teams of 3-5 on an real-life use case.

Expert Instruction

Modules and workshops are delivered by experienced instructors who combine:

  • Strong theoretical knowledge
  • Practical experience from industry collaboration
  • Real-life case examples and project insights

This ensures a rich balance between conceptual understanding and hands-on practice.

Face‑to‑Face Workshops (Hybrid or On‑Site)

For hybrid or fully in‑person variants, the course includes a series of face‑to‑face workshops that focus on collaborative learning and real application of systems engineering principles.

Workshops feature:

  • Team-based project work
  • Participants work in small teams on a progressive real-life SE use case, applying the theory learned online.
  • Hands-on exercises to reinforce key methods
  • Group discussions and reflection moments to strengthen understanding
  • A strong emphasis on collaboration, mirroring the multidisciplinary nature of systems engineering practice

This mix of digital learning and live interaction ensures participants not only know the fundamentals but can also apply them confidently.

Why This Training?

This training is ideally suited for organizations seeking to:

  • Develop a common language around systems engineering
  • Strengthen foundational SE competencies across teams
  • Foster system thinking and collaborative problem solving
  • Introduce SE practices in a structured, pragmatic, and scalable way

The balanced format - online modules plus interactive workshops - makes it accessible, engaging, and effective for both new learners and practitioners seeking reinforcement.
